Refer to page 61, Terrain and Combat section – the attacker has their Combat Ability reduced by 1. Similar for Shooting at a target behind a wall but be mindful of the notes in the Line of Sight and Shooting section on the same page in the previous column.

To a greater extent, before the game begins you should decide on how terrain will affect your game, based on the information and suggestions provided in the Terrain section. I did this because everyones terrain is different!
However also bear in mind that most Ancient battles were fought without much terrain or with lots when one side was at a disadvantage (typically outnumbered) and again this is explained in the terrain section.

I did start work on a supplement/ rules pack for fighting in settlements and sieges, this is still ongoing.

Hope that all helps, any other questions please ask!

I recall writing some, but the file is on another computer, there were also some lists.

I can’t think what they were off hand but as I fought Agincourt (in 10mm – article was in a Wargames Soldier Strategy magazine) I must have done something useful!

I would treat them as difficult ground (same as woods thinking on it) for mounted cavalry and uneven for infantry.. You could add a bonus to the defender if cavalry charge a unit behind stakes or make them take a morale test.

However, open to suggestions if none of that works!

And yes it would be nice to actually redo the original lists – must find some time!

    Welcome

    Thanks for the report

    looks great.

When rallying, you only roll 2D6 (unless you risk SIPS), use the units morale not any accompanying commanders and any enemy nearby (inc skirmishers) can reduce the morale further. Units can of course, despite all that, still rally 🙂

Also when a unit flees from combat it has to roll greater than the pursuers, otherwise they are dispersed/destroyed.

Any other questions, do ask and yes War & Conquest is quite popular for Dark Age games

    An example will help

24 infantry, in three ranks of 8 have a frontage of 160mm and a depth of 60mm.

So three of your bases, has 12 infantry and a frontage of 150mm and a depth of 50.
So pop them on a piece of card or other sturdy movement item, and then either add extra figures, tokens or use a piece of paper to record starting numbers, casualties and keep a track of ranks (loss of ranks has an impact of combat value and once a unit hits half strength – in this case down to 12 models, has an impact on morale)

Alternatively of course, it might be a perfect excuse to start another army 🙂

    Anyway, welcome!

    Hi George

Well, if you have another army based the same then yes no problem. 🙂

Frontage is 20mm sq per infantry fig (regardless of light or heavy/regular – as the rules use a combat bonus which is different value for heavy or lights) and cavalry is 25mm x 50 (so 2 on a 50mm sq base is spot on as multi basing is absolutely fine, many of my armies are multi based)

So for your forces if playing against someone with a ‘legally’ based army (but see above that doesn’t matter between consenting adults) you might need to do as follows –
As Multi basing is fine make an adjustment to troop numbers based on the unit frontages and either add tokens (or standalone figures) to make up the numbers or probably easier simply make a movement tray to the correct frontage size, place figures on top (ideally somewhere near the required amount) and then use a suitable system to record correct starting number of models and deduct as required.

Hope that quick answer assists but feel free to ask more

Thanks – yes I didn’t do the medieval book, its not an area I know much about and I suspect its based on the lists you suggest.

I did try and check all those lists for points clues, but undoubtably some typos got through 🙂

Personally I would like all the lists to be expanded into their own individual lists or booklets like the age of warlords Thats a mammoth project and needs to be done by someone that knows the period. I do have some lists on the crusades, and the medieval period but really it needs someone to ‘volunteer’ and put their stamp on it

I can help with guidance on any ‘special/feature’ rules and points checking and editing etc etc.

If you fancy that, then let me know.

I have sent you an email so you have my personal email rather than info, where messages tend to get lost with all the spam that arrives

In the early crusades list he enables a reroll of failed combat morale tests
In the original crusades list he allows extra SIPs
If that early list is not on the forum here it will be in a few moments once I have checked!

Donald, thanks for the update, good to hear you like what you have received!

Yes, about 10 units per side should give you plenty, my greeks tend to be about 8 to 9 plus personalities.

I would suggest start with 1500 to 2000 points as a maximum per side, as this gives enough to get a good game, but not enough to have access to every troop type.

I would suggest as umpire, you draw up the army lists,, a civil war might make it simpler as neither side can complain the other had better troops 🙂

Welcome to War & conquest – I also answered your other post in the QRC section

1 – If the Romans are not in the woods, they are not disordered and get their bonuses. I acknowledge that in some cases there is a discussion if one model is in the wood and the rest are not, what should apply but being strict about it, thats the rule.

    2 – Just use b

    Hope those answers help

    Hi there

Welcome to the world of War & Conquest

yes when charging there is only the Impact Bonus of +1, unless its clearly noted elsewhere in an army list or similar.
In the book (page 80) Impact is listed under ‘other bonuses’ to remind you about it. We first meet it on page 53. It looks like the person who did the QRC (a member of the community) just duplicated it, I will see if I can edit it in some way.

A countercharging unit does not get the impact bonus, see page 53 for why

Cavalry are Battle Formations but currently get no Combat Rank Bonus but do get Push and Shove bonus and if they charge enemy flank or rear, you get those bonuses as well.
I have written some updates and am planning on giving cavalry Combat Rank bonus (subject to history in some circumstances) to help level them up a bit. Because of that, Shock bonus will then change. More on that in a few weeks.

Brilliant, good to hear it arrived in what seems like a reasonable time considering the distance involved!

Any questions just shoot me an email, message or carrier pigeon.

Email usually get best results as I do sometimes miss posts on the forum or Facebook..

Look forward to hearing how the games go, I hope to get some more in soon myself as I have barely played a game of any sort for ages.

No problem replying its just takes me longer 🙂

8 cats can take on 16 infantry, provided they charged they probably have a decent chance.

Whilst I am obviously biased, the book was put together to be a real visual feast, with the vast majority of rule explanations using photos rather than diagrams, probably one of the first times it was done at the level we took it to.. 🙂

You can view some page spreads when you look at the War & conquest rulebook in the webstore

Many people were/still are very impressed and I am very proud of the book – games not too bad either 🙂

Whilst it might seem an odd thing to suggest, if you can find a willing gaming group partner, buying two copies may work out less expensive overall than two copies individually..

If you want more than that let me know and I can see if there are better/cheaper ways to send them. (possibly not, but I can take a look) – just let me know

    Hope that helps

    Hi

hopefully you got my email, on holiday and it looks like you put the first post as we left 🙂

Answer to q 3, not familiar with fog basing, but if both armies are based the same I am sure you can make it work.

Q2, NO shouldn’t be, but always happy to try and help confirm points values, especially if we are getting some new lists out of it 🙂

Q1 – you will probably want to combine the infantry into units of 24 for more durability. this is easy to do by making a new movement tray to the correct frontage and putting the models on there rather than physically rebase them.

Check the Age of Warlords booklet as this may help with some of your army list needs and were well played in a couple of themed events. (all the event reports were lost when we changed the website and forum unfortunately )

there’s a battle report called ‘they came from beyond the sea’ which gives some explantation to the rules, you can download it from here or the scarab webstore for free.

    Any other questions please ask,
