Post Dwarfs, or Dwarves and all things Elf
Depending on which fantasy books you read, and games you may have played in the past, there are a range of ways to depict Dwarfs and Elves on the gaming table.

These are of course 'stereotypes', but worth discussing briefly before I start the army lists (NB someone has been pre emptive, and sent a dwarf list!)

Elves
Good fighters or skilled with bow
Decent morale
Quick on their feet.

The first two are simple to cover within the existing rules where required. For the third, I am suggesting a +1 to the movement value for all Elven formations. The rule might be called 'fleet of foot', or 'quick on their feet'

Dwarfs, or Dwarves
Tough/stubborn
Good with their hands
Slow

Here again, the first two can be reviewed within existing rules. For 'slow', I am actually thinking that i shall ignore any such rule and let the formations maintain the same movement values as everyone else.

No doubt other will have a couple of thoughts, so throw them in the pot.

NB, theres absolutely no reason why people who want to convert other fantasy army game systems stat lines across can't simply keep them and any associated rules, but clearly I have to avoid treading on other companies Intellectual Property and Copyright.

I'm tempted with Elves being Light troops, whilst the Dwarves use the optional early Greek heavy armour rules, oh and they should be 'height challenged'.

Glad to see progress on the fantasy rules, Rob.

I would like to speculate on what sort of cavalry dwarfs would have?

Giant earthworms or moles? Rhinos? Ponies?

Ponies and wild boar are possible beasts of choice.
Mind you, the use of giraffes would be a bit of a tall order.

How about ponies pulling mine wagons for a chariot/war-wagon effect?

WRT Elfs, depending on who you read they could be very fragile in combat, relying on glamour and illusion to fool the opponent. However it seems universal that Elfs used some kind of missile and attack at range (I've read of sleeping darts as well as bows - hence the term 'elf shot' for someone in a coma).

Will there be new lists/rules/figures every few years?

... ahem ...

I rather like the stereo types (and I am being sensible again now). However my fantasy background is mainly AD&D, Tolkien and (shhh...) W*rh*mm*r.

Dwarfs should not move slower as on the battlefield their discipline/training should make up for their "shorter gait".

I'm looking forward to the "medieval style heavy cavalry army with a slight Arthurian twang" (working title).

Cheers

Matt

Imperial or kingdom structure:
King with guards/household
Well equipped veterans
Complex maneuvres possible
Use of reserve (strategic abilities of characters on higher level)
Lots of regular troop types, well trained
Less militia, poorly trained or volunteers
Some fanatical
Valuable mercenaries

For elves: less punch but more magic
For dwarfs: less magic but more rigidity

I've always thought of a dwarven army as anolog with an EIR army.

Lots of heavy armour, professional troops. Reliable artillery and largely poor cavalry (not sure what the form should take), few skirmish type troops.

Elves the polar opposite, so plenty of light, skirmish style troops to that hit and run, bleeding the enemy before the shock troops close and finish the job.

I too take my real inspiration from D&D and Tolkien, but we never really see these armies clash in a battle the size of which a game would portray.
