Post Battle of Deorham 577AD
I re-fought this battle from my scenario book yesterday, it was a typical Dark Age battle in that it was a slog for both armies. Here are a couple of pictures to whet your appetite, full report and more pictures on my blog.

Post Re: Battle of Deorham 577AD
Hi George,
very nice report and I'm very jealous as I've always wanted to re-fight this battle as it was fought (they think) very close to where I live, I was actually at Dyrham Hill Fort at the weekend as its only about a 5 minute drive from where I live 8-)

Cheers, Steve.

Post Re: Battle of Deorham 577AD
Hi Steve,

I am sure Ceawlin was cursing those Welsh, if they had been caught both flanks were up in the air and the cavalry would have run amuk. Even so the only hope the British had was to knock out the Saxon centre, but they did avoid the Hearthguard in the attack, again it was a surprise how quickly this succeeded. Both sides then threw their SIP's in as it was crucial to gain the advantage. The Saxons managed it but failed with their flank attacks otherwise it would probably have been a narrow Saxon victory, but enough to take the cities.

Maybe I was just lucky and the game played perfectly, another time it would no doubt be much different.

George

Nice stuff

Yes Steve - it is about 5 minutes from your, 15 or so from mine!

Been there several times, I also have scenario for this battle and would like to do it as I find the battle, and the circumstances leading up to it fascinating and intriguing
